Spring Outing 2018
Monday, 30th April
The 2018 Spring Outing took place in Norwich on Monday 30th April with a group of 21 members. Our morning session around the ‘French Borough’ was led by Jonathan Hooton, a Norwich blue guide and long-standing BAHS member. This was a follow up to the informative lecture which he had presented at our 2017 AGM.
In the past, we have been fortunate with the weather but, this year, it poured with rain and, besides Jonathan’s excellent guiding, the morning was memorable for everyone ‘getting soaked’… but in good British style we took it in good heart! Our lunch break, at Loch Fyne on St Giles Street, was appreciated all the more for its warm welcome and good food.
In the afternoon we walked round the corner to Country & Eastern in the exotic Old Skating Rink on Bethel Street. This is now home to the South Asian Decorative Arts & Crafts Collection. The owners, who are members of BAHS, gave a short talk on both the Collection and the Building. We were then offered refreshments before looking round their exhibits and lots of enticing items for sale!

Spring Outing 2016
Monday, 18th April
An excellent day out was held on 18th April. The morning was spent exploring Ware Hall House in Wells-next-the-Sea with a talk and guided tour by Christine Adams (niece of the original owner). After a pleasant but rather slow lunch in the Globe at Wells-next-the-Sea we visited the new Agricultural exhibition at Holkham Hall where a number of us also took the opportunity to visit the walled garden which is in the process of being restored.
Further details about our visit will be found in our summer newsletter.

The building of Ware Hall House has been described as “the DIY job of the (20th) century”. Every item, down to the medieval nails, was transported from Ware in Hertfordshire to Wells-next-the-Sea and then rebuilt, against all the odds.

This exhibition, which opened in March, tells the story of Holkham’s unique farming heritage. It replaces the longstanding Bygones Museum.

The Merchant houses in the heart of Blakeney High Street
Saturday afternoon, 6 September; 2.00pm till approx 5.30pm
For those attending, please meet just before 2pm by the History Centre (back of Blakeney Village Hall).
Organised by the History Centre, this afternoon ‘walk & talk’ explores the evolution of the Merchant House, once part of the Page and Turner estates, in the very heart of Blakeney High Street.
Page and Turner were business partners, the last of the shipping magnates, following in the footsteps of the Temples, Breretons, Robert Wells and Augustus Hill. At their zenith these properties extended from New Road in the west to Back Lane in the east. The walk begin with the Merchant’s House, the first Page home, exploring the property grew in size from 1769 then contracted in the 20th century, as fortuned waxed and waned. |
Moving up the High Street, the ‘walk and talk’ will widen out to explore properties such as Ponds Court, the Methodist Chapel, Blakeney Neighbourhood cottages and the Nora Clogstoun/John Wallace connection before arriving at the last merchant house, Turner home, for afternoon tea.
